Introduction: Why This Book Was Important to Me

As a black audio book narrator, it’s important for me to help shine light on stories that might otherwise not be heard. Kevin has put into words the pain and experiences that others can take and learn from. We often hear the stories of famous african american athletes and entertainers. Too rarely are we exposed to the lives of ordinary people.

Songs in the Key of Love is the story of Kevin Evans. An African-American male growing up in Chicago as he learns to navigate his way through family, life, and love. This open and honest depiction of the struggles, triumphs, and journey to manhood gives a voice to unheard and a glimpse into many sides of love.

Kevin’s story includes his and his family/friends struggles. These include murder, abuse, mental illness and other afflictions within the black community that need to be addressed. His story highlights how these afflictions effect individuals and the community.
